Around 200 people have been evacuated from a North Sydney Hospital and TAFE after a gas line was ruptured by an excavator.

It's believed a contractor working on Westbound Street in St Leonards accidentally ruptured a gas line with an excavator, causing a leak just before 2pm today, according to NSW Fire and Rescue.

Around 200 people were evacuated from the nearby TAFE and Royal North Shore Private Hospital.
