Flights delayed as thick fog blankets Sydney

Sydneysiders waking up to a glorious State of Origin victory have been met with a thick blanket of fog shrouding the city this morning.

Visibility is down to just 50 metres at various locations in western Sydney including Richmond, Campbelltown and Bankstow.

The dense mist has pushed visibility at Sydney Airport down to just 400 metres, forcing flight delays and cancellations.

The fog has also forced a ferry at Parramatta to turn back earlier this morning, with more delays expected across the network.

A Virgin spokeswoman told customers to expect flight cancellations this morning. The fog is expected to clear by 8am, with flights disrupted until at least mid-morning.

A Qantas spokeswoman urged travellers to check in with their airline before heading to the airport.

The deluge of rain that has struck Sydney in the past few days is being blamed for the fog. The increased moisture combined with dropping temperatures has led to the condensed atmosphere that is now covering the city.

Motorists are being urged to keep their fog lights on and take extra care on greasy roads from lingering rain overnight.

Delays are being reported on the M4 and M7 motorways.

Fog in the eastern suburbs is expected to clear sooner than the west.
