Thick blanket of Sydney fog causes flight chaos

More than 10 domestic flights from Sydney Airport have been cancelled this morning, as thick flog shrouds the city.

One international flight was diverted from Sydney to Brisbane and about ten domestic flights in both arrivals and departures were cancelled.

Sydney Airport remains operational today but travellers have been told to expect delays and to check flights with their airlines.

Drivers have also experienced poor visibility, with low-lying areas in the city’s south and west including Camden experiencing the worst of the fog.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said the fog would clear around the airport by 8am but would take longer in the western suburbs.

“Visibility is still less than 500 metres in some western suburbs like Bankstown and Holsworthy,” he said.

“It’s even lower than that in Richmond and Camden, where it’s about visibility is down to 100 metres.”

Mr Dutschke said the fog was caused by drier conditions, with cloud cover cleared up.

The city will reach a top of 20 degrees today, with Sydney on track for a drier week with the odd shower.

“It’s a much better week to do the washing. I’m sure there’s plenty of it,” Mr Dutschke said.
