Sydney courtroom violence captured on CCTV

Exclusive video obtained by 9NEWS has revealed shocking acts of violence unfolding in Sydney’s law courts.

CCTV from the Downing Centre Court complex captured one instance of a man brazenly assaulting a female police prosecutor, before trying to fleeing to an elevator.

The attack and attempted escape sparked a 10-minute long scuffle with Sheriff’s Officers, who eventually managed to wrestle the subdued offender into cuffs and lead him away.

In another video from Liverpool Court, a man in white is seen lashing out in a packed courtroom, sparking an all-in brawl.

Over the last year there have been a total 39 incidences of violence in NSW courts, compared to 42 from 2013 to 2014, and 39 the year before that.

Court security officers typically rely on batons, pepper spray, handcuffs and tactical training in order to quash violent individuals.

Following the shooting of Curtis Cheng at Parramatta Police Headquarters last year however, an extra 40 Sheriff’s Officers have been recruited since September.

All of them have been armed with the power of arrest.

“Those deplorable events have led to our community being cautious and being worried about security, and so within the court system we've responded to that,” NSW Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton told 9NEWS.

The NSW Government has announced it will continue the $5.2 million funding for the extra positions in this month's state budget.
