Sydney cat’s great escape turns into roller door rollercoaster

A mischievous cat is lucky to be alive after being found dangling from its neck in a unit block’s garage door in Sydney’s west.

The feline has firefighters from St Marys station to thank for its rescue after it was spotted by a passing ambulance driver clinging on for dear life, having become stuck during an attempted escape through a wire grille.

The cat triggered a motion detecting sensor when it automatically lowered, which sent the door and the perilously perched animal back towards the ceiling – and it may have been going up and down all night.

Firefighter Andrew Sarson said his crew had just responded to another nearby job when they heard the call for help over their radios.

“We thought it was dead,” he said.

“It had been hanging there for some time.”

Firefighters used hand tools to cut through the door and the freed feline scurried off after being rescued.

“We were getting scratched up a bit,” Mr Sarson said.

“We do get the cat up the tree from time to time but that’s stereotypical.

“It was a bit different.”

Mr Sarson said they were unsure who the cat belonged to but that it appeared otherwise uninjured.
