Developer of Sydney apartment building denies claims it is at risk of collapse

The developer of a Sydney apartment complex has defended claims that the building is at risk of collapsing, arguing that an external report was conducted using "incorrect assumptions".

The Toplace Group built the Vicinity complex in Canterbury around six years ago, offering more than 270 apartments to hundreds of residents.

Today, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that apartment owners had hired a structural engineer to assess the building, who deemed it as a "risk to occupants" and at risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake.

Videos taken by owners from the basement of the building appear to show cracks in the walls.

A spokesperson for Toplace told 9News in a statement the building was inspected by NSW Government officials and other independent experts at 2.30pm today and "no orders will be made in respect of the building".

"Toplace has received technical advice that the report by Rothshires has been formulated using obviously incorrect assumptions resulting in incorrect conclusions on the stability of the building," a spokesperson for the developer said.

"Toplace's expert technical advice is that the risk to the building in the Rothshires report does not exist – the report is simply invalid.

"The building's structural integrity has been certified by engineers that have complete information on the building."

An investigation into the building's integrity continues.
