A man has been rushed to hospital with head injuries after being hit by an ambulance in inner-city Sydney's inner city.

The 32-year old was hit by the vehicle near Central Station about midnight last night.

The ambulance was on its way to a call with lights and sirens on as the man crossed the road amid Sydney's wet weather.

He was rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for surgery.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
