Man charged over Sydney car rampage

A man has been charged after allegedly crashing into multiple vehicles, narrowly missing pedestrians, during a rampage through Sydney's south.

Police smashed a window and hauled the 61-year-old man out of his Hyundai after a pursuit in Sutherland overnight.

The driver allegedly started his run of destruction when he travelled on to the wrong side of the road and hit a Toyota Corolla, which span out and smashed into a parked Holden Commodore about midnight.

Police allege he fled the scene before driving on to the wrong side of another road and into oncoming traffic.

The driver of another Corolla pulled over in an attempt to avoid a crash but was unable to escape the Hyundai.

Witnesses were almost struck when they surrounded the car, which drove over a median strip to escape, according to police.

The driver of a Suzuki Swift was allegedly hit as they tried to slow at a red light, with police alleging the 61-year-old reversed and rammed the car three more times before fleeing.

Police were then led on a low-speed pursuit, where the driver allegedly ran a red light before coming to a stop on Anzac Parade.

He was forcibly removed from the car and refused a breath test.

The man returned a negative breath analysis at Sutherland Police Station where he was charged with a range of offences including fail to submit to breath test, drive motor vehicle to menace another with intent and not stop when directed to do so.

Police said none of the other drivers involved were injured.

However, a male constable was treated after getting involved in an accident with a Mazda 3 while responding to the incident. The crash will be investigated.

The man has been refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.
