A person in far north Queensland is believed to have contracted the mosquito-borne Zika virus while travelling overseas.

Queensland's health department say a person on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait could have Zika but it may also turn out they have dengue fever.

Zika virus and dengue fever have similar symptoms including a skin rash, red itchy eyes, fever, muscle and joint pain, headache and lack of energy.
