The mother of a nine-month-old baby girl that washed up on Surfers Paradise beach has now been charged over the infant’s death.

The 23-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Byron Bay Local Court today, charged with effectively failing to protect her young daughter –who police claim was thrown into the Tweed River before drifting north to the Gold Coast.

The woman’s case was held in a closed court and adjourned till Tuesday next week.

The development comes several weeks after the woman’s partner, the baby’s 47-year-old father, was charged with murdering the couple’s daughter.

Police allege the man thought the child may have been demon-possessed before throwing her in the Tweed River.

His case is also before a New South Wales court.
