Support for the Coalition on the rise according to latest Newspoll

Support for the government has slightly improved over the past three weeks, after Malcolm Turnbull announced a sweeping overhaul to Australian citizenship rules.

The latest Newspoll, published in The Australian, found Labor’s lead has dropped slightly to 52 to 48 per cent in two-party preferred terms, down from 53 to 47 per cent three weeks ago, marking a slight boost for MrTurnbull’s government.

The Coalition’s primary vote remains steady at 36 per cent, six points below the result at last year’s election.

Labor’s primary vote has slipped from 36 to 35 per cent since the last poll, the Greens has also fallen from 10 to nine per cent and One Nation has remain steady at 10 per cent.

The results come after the Turnbull government revealed it is tightening the requirements for Australian citizenship, with applicants to face a stand-alone English test and be asked to commit to embracing Australian values.
