Support for the federal coalition is now at its lowest level since Malcolm Turnbull ousted Tony Abbott as prime minister, the first Newspoll of the year shows.

The coalition trails Labor by 46 to 54 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, but the opposition has not picked up the disaffected votes, according to the poll published in Monday's The Australian newspaper

Instead, independents and minor parties have surged in support from 15 to 19 per cent on the primary vote, with Pauline Hanson's One Nation has eight per cent.
