Super consultation a strength: Pyne

Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne has defended the government's kowtow to the backbench over superannuation policy changes, saying consultation is not a weakness.

The planned $500,000 lifetime non-concessional cap on fund balances, backdated to 2007, has been dumped.

"Consultation is strength," Mr Pyne told the Nine Network, adding that it was a win because it's now a better policy than four months ago.

"People want government that is prepared to consult with people and get the right policy."

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese noted the government had a tough task of dealing with internal division before it got anything done in parliament.

Labor superannuation spokeswoman Katy Gallagher said Labor was waiting to examine the draft legislation.

"It's clear that (government backbencher) George Christensen and his mates are writing the coalition superannuation policy," she told ABC TV.

But Financial Services Minister Kelly O'Dwyer said it was the job of backbenchers to be involved in policy discussions.

"That's the way good government operates and we embrace it," she told ABC radio.
