A ute collided with the cyclist on Caloundra Road. 9NEWS

The Sunshine Coast cycling community is today mourning the loss of one of its own.

A 44-year-old man was killed when a ute collided into the back of him on Caloundra Road at Meridan Plains on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast about 6am.

Cyclist Peter Duncan told 9NEWS there needs to be more awareness for cyclist safety.

"It's absolutely devastating. No words can describe what that family will go through from this moment forward," Mr Duncan said.  

"Bikes aren't crash proof. We're very fragile in that environment.

"It's real and it does happen and people need to be more vigilant, they need to be more aware."

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating whether speed was a factor. They've also taken a blood sample from the driver.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who has dashcam vision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
