Prime Minister Tony Abbott won't say whether Australia approached military strongman Prabowo Subianto to plead the clemency case for Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Mr Prabowo reportedly penned a letter to President Joko Widodo at the weekend in which he said that if the president were to "postpone the executions indefinitely", he would come out in support of the decision.

Responding to questions from reporters in Canberra on Friday, Mr Abbott said: "We made every effort through official channels, through unofficial channels, publicly and privately to appeal to the better angels of their natures."
