A primary school student remains in a critical condition after a branch fell on a group of children during a school trip to Government House in Canberra earlier this week.

The female year 6 student from Central Coast Grammar School was visiting the governor-general's home as part of a school excursion on Wednesday when a tree branch fell on a group of kids, critically injuring one.

NSW Ambulance confirmed paramedics rushed to the location at 2.43pm after reports of the fallen tree branch injuring a group of children.

In an email sent to parents, the school's principal Phil O'Regan said the girl remained in a critical condition and was under the care of a "specialist medical team".

It also said three other students had been taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the fallen branch but they had since been discharged.

"One student... remains in hospital, in speaking with [their] mother, she has advised that [she] is in a critical condition," the email reads.

"Three other students who were taken to hospital yesterday afternoon for observation were thankfully given medical clearance last night and allowed to return home.

"Our staff remain in contact with all Year 6 families, offering the care and assistance of our counselling and wellbeing teams and we extend our support to any other student requiring additional help."
