Fresh strawberry sabotage jeopardises industry

Local strawberry growers are fuming after two new cases of berry sabotage were reported to South Australia police.

Police said they received two reports of "sharp objects" being found in strawberries bought from the Adelaide suburb of Salisbury and in the Clare region yesterday.

Today, Woolworths has confirmed one of the two tampered-with punnets had been sold in its Clare store, but said it was still unclear which Salisbury store was involved.

The berries are believed to have been grown interstate, but the new incident has infuriated local growers.

Industry leaders want jail time for offenders after the fresh allegations struck fear back into to hearts of consumers, who had only recently gained trust back following an earlier spate of fruit sabotage.

"Throw the book at them, it’s getting to a stage where it's becoming ridiculous we just need to catch the perpetrators," Angelo Demasi from Adelaide Produce Markets told 9News.

The sentiment is echoed by frustrated consumers.

'It's absolutely disgusting, it's dangerous," one woman said.

"It's not funny at all. I think these people need to be found and punished," a man said.

Growers have reassured the public any stock on shelves has been thoroughly checked and is safe to eat.
