Storms linger in southeast as rain threatens to delay Ashes again

Damaging winds have caused a tree to fall onto a house in South Australia as a quickly moving storm lashed the state.

The wild weather hit Adelaide this afternoon, with residents told to brace for strong winds, hailstones and rainfall.

A homeowner in the town of Stirling, 16 kilometres from the heart of Adelaide, had a lucky escape after powerful winds caused a tree to fall on their property.

Flash-flooding occurred in Angaston as a band of showers moved across the state.

The local Foodland, post office and primary school were flooded, with students forced to evacuate.

“Teachers started realising there was water coming through the ceiling next thing we know we have 110 students having to be evacuated due to safety,” Angaston Primary School Principal Sam Lawrence told 9NEWS.

“We weren't sure how bad it was going to be.”

Fortunately the deluge passed quickly, and an earlier severe thunderstorm warning for most of South Australia has since been reduced.

People in parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands and North East Pastoral districts, continue to be advised of damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall tonight.

In Brisbane earlier drizzle caused delays for the Ashes at the Gabba.

Showery are expected to continue for the next four days, but it'll remain warm; the mercury is expected to reach 28C throughout the Test.

Melbourne dodged afternoon thunderstorms, but the radar is showing lingering showers tonight- heaviest in the west.

Tomorrow is expected to reach 33C, following a week-long trend of sweltering conditions.

Meanwhile, Sydney is the place to be in Australia tomorrow with  plenty of sunshine and a top of 27C.

And in Perth, it will be a beautiful day with clear skies and a maximum of 32C.
