Stop political churn, plan long-term: poll

Australians want to stop the churn of political leaders and see more long-term planning to improve the nation's system of government, according to a new poll.

The survey of 1000 people, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, has drilled down into some of the key issues confronting Australian politics.

Almost 44 per cent of respondents said fewer changes in party leadership was the key to correcting the country's system of government.

Carving away at the three layers of law-making and improving levels of bipartisan support on key policy issues were favoured by just shy of 39 per cent of people apiece.

Introducing longer terms of political cycles was the preferred antidote for more than one in four people, with nearly 18 per cent undecided.

Respondents were also asked about the government being required to cost proposals and projects in the budget over four years, potentially clouding the clarity over longer-term measures.

Almost half of those polled said they would support new ways to see the government forecast economic impacts of key policies over 10 years, with 35 per cent of respondents unsure and 16.3 per cent against.
