Stop being rowdy, Speaker tells MPs

If you're often watching federal parliament and find yourself bemoaning the playground politics unfolding, don't give up.

The man whose job it is to pull rowdy MPs into order agrees with you. And he wants things to change.

Tony Smith, who was returned to the federal Speaker's chair on Tuesday, wants to make the chamber a bit more civil.

As he accepted the job for another term, he implored MPs that parliament need not be as loud or rude as it often is - because it demoralises the public.

"None of the 150 of us could say that our constituents are satisfied with parliamentary standards as they are," he said.

"We owe it to them to do more to improve things."

Mr Smith, who first took up the post following the sacking of former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop over the "choppergate" affair, vowed to continue to be fair in his dealings with all MPs.
