Alleged killer of four-year-old Tyrell Cobb remanded in custody

A Queensland man charged with the murder of his former partner's four-year-old son has been remanded in custody.

Matthew Anthony Ian Scown, 32, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday morning after he was charged with the torture and murder of Tyrell Cobb in 2009.

The boy died in hospital after he was found unconscious at a property at Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast.

Police have previously laid a murder charge over the boy's death, however the prosecution withdrew its case in 2010.

Legal Aid solicitor Rachael Martin did not apply for bail and the matter was adjourned for committal callover on September 21.

The boy's 32-year-old mother, Heidi Strbak, will also appear on the same day after she was remanded in custody over the same charges on Thursday afternoon.

Scown smiled at a group of supporters in the dock during his brief appearance, including three young children.

Last month, police had indicated a public appeal for details about Tyrell's life had uncovered new information.

They had called for anyone who may have lived at or visited two unit complexes where the boy lived - in Biggera Waters and Runaway Bay - to come forward.

The pair was charged with torture because police believed Tyrell suffered injuries over a number of days, Detective Inspector Mark White said on Thursday.
