80kg St Bernard rescued from roof in US

Firefighters are renowned for rescuing cats in trees, but another pet has proven a much bigger challenge.

“He’s a big, old, hairy, loveable, slobbery Saint Bernard,” Renee Roth said of her son’s dog Whiskey.

He also weighs 80kgs and spent hours stuck on a roof.

“He was standing there and kept looking over on the garage. I’m like ‘don’t jump’,” Ms Roth said.

Unable to lure the dog with food, she called the fire brigade.

“We do occasionally get the cat in the tree call, but dog on the roof, not so much,” Lt Anthony Scavo of the Spring Lake Fire Department said.

A day after the rescue of a racoon went global, Whiskey’s plight captured the hearts of his Minnesota community.

“It was kind of an organised effort,” Battalion Chief Jeremiah Anderson said.

“Pushing from the outside and pulling from the inside and once Whiskey figured out what we were doing I think he kind of cooperated and jumped through.”

Ms Roth said she was happy to have Whiskey back on solid ground, but won’t be volunteering to look after him when her son is deployed as part of the National Guard in September.

“I just thought the worst,” she said.

“He’s a great dog.”
