Terror suspect bailed by Sydney court

A Sydney university worker accused of plotting to kill politicians and targeting city landmarks has been given bail.

Sri Lankan national Mohamed Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen, 25, was freed from jail in Sydney Central Local Court today after the sole piece of evidence against him was heavily criticised.

NSW Police had earlier said a worker at the University of NSW tipped them off after allegedly finding a notebook that named several "symbolic" locations and individuals as "potential targets".

But a handwriting expert, who compared the hit list with a sample of Mr Nizamdeen's writing, couldn't conclude they were by the same person.

Police also alleged he was affiliated with ISIL but did not charge him as such.

"The case against him is extremely weak. Almost non-existent," Mr Kheir said.

"We'll be continuing with the fight until all charges are dropped and he is completely exonerated." 

A smiling Mr Nizamdeen was seen with relatives and supporters heading home after the court hearing.

Supporters and family of Mr Nizamdeen rallied in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo earlier this month, carrying posters saying the university staff member had been framed.

"Kamer is innocent," one placard read.

His bail conditions include that he report to police twice a week, live at an address in northern Sydney and not contact any UNSW staff or prosecution witnesses.
