Sri Lanka stops asylum-seeker boat

The Sri Lankan navy has disrupted a people-smuggling venture to Australia.

Eighteen people were aboard a fishing boat at Valaichchenai on the country's east coast when Sri Lankan authorities intercepted it before it started its journey.

The people on the boat were linked to those on one Australian authorities intercepted and returned to Sri Lanka earlier this week, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said on Thursday.
