Academic Barry Spurr has resigned from the University of Sydney in the wake of controversy over racist emails.

The university suspended Professor Spurr in October over emails in which he described Prime Minister Tony Abbott as an "Abo lover" and lashed out out at "Mussies" and "chinky-poos".

It launched an investigation into the matter.

On Thursday, the university announced Professor Spurr had tendered his resignation, which was accepted.

"At Professor Spurr's request, the university will provide no further comment on this matter," it said in a statement.

Professor Spurr advised the federal government's independent review of the national curriculum.
