'Spontaneously exploding' bottle sparks wine recall

Brewer De Bortoli Wines has issued a recall for a variety of shiraz, warning the bottle could randomly shatter when exposed to heat for a prolonged period.

A recall notice issued today states that all 750ml glass bottles of Woodfired Sparkling Shiraz with the date marking of "L7279b1" or "L7327b1" posed a "significant" risk to customers.

"We have identified a packaging fault with the bottle, which may, under certain heat conditions over extended periods, cause the bottle to shatter," the release read.

The shiraz was previously available for sale at a number of independent retailers in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

Customers have been advised to avoid opening the bottle, to only handle it with a towel and to ensure it is stored in a cool location.
