Malcolm Turnbull should head to Sydney's west and stay in an indigenous community, the head of the prime minister's advisory council says.

Warren Mundine would like to see the new Liberal leader adopt the practice of his predecessor Tony Abbott, who spent time in a remote location every year.

But he told ABC radio on Wednesday it would be good for Mr Turnbull to visit some urban communities, noting western Sydney has one of the largest Aboriginal populations in the country.

Mr Mundine, who received a call from the new prime minister on Tuesday said Mr Turnbull was a very strong advocate for constitutional recognition.

The prime minister indicated to the council's chair he would also work towards a 2017 referendum on the matter.
