Speaker sin-bins record 18 Labor MPs

Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has punted 18 Labor MPs from a rowdy question time, an achievement Labor claims is an all-time record.

Mrs Bishop described the behaviour of Labor members as "an absolute disgrace", saying it was no accident.

Quite a few of those sent packing for an hour each were from Victoria and apparently intent on getting out of parliament early to head south to campaign for Saturday's state election.

"But there was a deliberate campaign of noise and disruption," Mrs Bishop said.

It was pathetic for Labor MPs to subsequently pretend they had all "behaved like little angels" and were being picked on.

Manager of opposition business Tony Burke put his slant on Thursday's question time.

"At risk of adding to the total, I should note that 18 people in one question time is an all-time record since federation," he said.

Leader of the House Christopher Pyne, unsurprisingly, agreed with the Speaker.

It was very apparent - and the public should know - that Labor had run a deliberate strategy of ejection, he said.

"If they intend to continue to behave like idiots then they will deserve to be thrown out."

Mr Pyne had a suggestion for Labor.

"The opposition should stop trying to disrupt the parliament and trying to make life difficult for the government," he said.
