Prime Minister Tony Abbott says Bronwyn Bishop's resignation as Speaker was "unprompted".
Mr Abbott said he had numerous conversations with Mrs Bishop since the scandal over her expenses broke in mid-July.
"She did the right thing unprompted after having done the wrong thing before and the important thing now is to ensure that we swiftly move to choose an effective new Speaker, a Speaker who can command the confidence of the House," he told reporters in Adelaide.
