Spate of Sydney bus fatalities

A man has died after being hit by a bus on a busy Sydney CBD street, making it the third bus fatality in five days in the metropolitan area.

A witness, who was on the 423 bus, said the pedestrian stepped in front of the vehicle on the corners of George and Liverpool Streets.

"A few people hopped off the bus to help," she said.

"Some people were in shock and couldn't move."

The woman said the bus driver was traumatised after the "very public death".

Another witness who arrived at the scene about 30 seconds after the accident said he saw the man lying in a pool of blood as paramedics worked to save his life.

The witness described him as being aged in his 50s, caucasian and smartly dressed in a business suit.

"From what I understand he didn't wait for the green light and was just trying to get across the road," the witness told AAP.

"The paramedics worked to save him for quite a while but he was already gone.

"It certainly makes me think twice about trying to cross the road now and waiting for the green light."

A CCTV camera stationed outside the Three Wise Monkeys pub is trained on the area where the accident happened.

The fatality follows two other deaths as a result of bus accidents in Sydney in the past week.

A 42-seater coach veered across a road at Haymarket in the city's south, mounted a footpath and ploughed into the Emperor's Garden restaurant about midday on Sunday.

A man believed to have been a local artist who was sitting on the pavement sketching was fatally injured after being hit by the coach.

Last Thursday a cyclist was killed after being hit by a bus in Neutral Bay on Sydney's north shore.

In January, a 51-year-old woman died after being trapped under a bus in Sydney's CBD.
