Business owners perform citizen's arrest on alleged thief in Melbourne

A man has been charged after he was caught stealing from a business in Melbourne CBD overnight.

Police said the man triggered an alarm at the tobacco store on Southbank Boulevard about 3.30am.

The store owners were quickly alerted and attended the store, finding the 50-year-old man attempting to flee with a quantity of cigarettes.

The owners performed a citizen's arrest and held the man until police arrived.

The 50-year-old Footscray man was later charged with burglary and unlawful assault.

He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on June 14.
