Woman hospitalised after being hit by police car in northern NSW

A woman has been hospitalised after she was hit by a police car in northern New South Wales this morning, sparking a critical incident investigation.

A police officer was responding to a call for help at 2.20am in South Kempsey when a woman was struck on Middleton Street.

The 39-year-old woman was taken to Kempsey Hospital by police before she was transferred to Port Macquarie Hospital.

She has since been transferred to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with suspected leg and spinal injuries.

"She is reported to be in a serious but stable condition; police have been told the injuries are not life-threatening," police said.

The male officer returned a negative roadside breath test.

"Officers from Mid North Coast Police Area Command established a crime scene and have commenced inquiries," police said.

Anyone who has dashcam of the incident is urged to contact police.

A critical incident team is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
