Bleak maths report card sparks new learning program in South Australia

South Australian public school students are grappling with significant difficulties in maths skills, leading the state government to introduce mandatory numeracy checks for all year 1 students from 2026. 

An eye-opening trial found more than 60 per cent of students assessed across 95 public schools experienced substantial challenges in mathematics. 

"I was shocked when I saw the data and wanted immediate action," Education Minister Blair Boyer said.

That action is the numeracy check, which aims to identify students who require additional support early on, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance to catch up.

The initiative mirrors the successful phonics check introduced in 2017, which resulted in a substantial improvement in literacy.

However, concerns have been raised about the potential workload for teachers.. 

"There is a question around workload because we know that's been an issue," Boyer said.

But teachers say they would support the initiative if it's properly implemented.

"It's quite daunting, I'll be honest with you, but if we get the right support, we can get it done," teacher Ayumu Shimada said.

The education department is now fine-tuning the assessment in time for the statewide rollout in 2026.
