Adelaide man arrested after allegedly biting, punching and spitting on a police officer

An Adelaide man has been arrested after allegedly biting, punching and spitting on a police officer.

Patrols stopped the man in the suburb of Somerton Park just before midnight for riding his bike without a light.

Police said when they told him he was going to be fined, he allegedly spat on one of them and attempted to ride away.

"The officer chased the cyclist on foot and arrested him," police said in a statement.

Police said the man allegedly bit and punched the officer during the arrest.

"The officer was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and was not admitted," police said.

The 29-year-old Somerton Park man was charged with aggravated assault.

He has been bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on December 23.
