Social media bragging bringing car hoons undone

Police are stepping up their fight against hoons, arresting 16 people and seizing 12 cars during a series of coordinated early-morning raids in Victoria.

Taskforce Regarder, which was set up in November 2015 in response to the growing number of hoon gatherings across Melbourne, used social media to gather evidence against those arrested this morning.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill told A Current Affair those boasting online and posting photos of their cars at ‘hoon meets’ brought their fate upon themselves.

"These people are now at risk of going to prison as a consequence of their hoon behaviour," he said.

"We will be making applications to the court to have those vehicles forfeited to the state."

"These are people who are employed, they've got no history with Victoria Police. Now, they're facing jail, now they're catching public transport to get to work each day."

The raids come exactly one week after the horror high-speed crash that killed Melbourne teenagers Harley Churchill and Ivana Clonaridis.

The pair were street racing at more than 160km/h when their car plunged off a bridge - exploding in flames and sparking a large grass fire.

They had been at a meet involving up to 100 vehicles.
