A snowboarder has suffered a moment of selfie-induced shame after filming being himself taken by a chairlift on the snowfields of Japan.

The rider was filming his winding passage down the slopes of Nagano's Chiisagata District with a selfie stick earlier this year when disaster struck.

After obliviously pulling up directly in the path of fast-moving chairlifts the thrill seeker stops to record the picturesque surroundings behind him.

But the serenity is quickly shattered as a chairlift hits the snowboarder on the head, bringing him to his knees.

The rider wrote online after the incident that around 100cm of snowfall in a day had closed the gap between the chairlifts and the ground where he was riding below.

"I said to my friend 20 seconds before to watch out for the chairlifts but I didn't take my own advice,” he said.

"I couldn't have planned it any better if I tried moving my camera from behind me to in front."
