A spring cold front is bringing snow to Tasmania, Victoria, and parts of South Australia and New South Wales, even as the rest of Australia warms up.

The trough and cold front saw snowfall at Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains, while Weatherzone reported light snow could also be expected as far north as the NSW Central West.

Melbourne topped at 13C today, with a temperature of 6C forecast for the night.

Tasmania was even colder, with a top of 12C and a forecast of 5C.

By contrast, Sydney reached 27C today, more than double Melbourne's warmest point.

Weatherzone has also warned that the cold front will spark dangerous winds in Australia's south-east.

Severe weather warnings are already in place for damaging winds in parts of Victoria and South Australia, with the dangerous conditions to spread in the next 24 hours.

Hogan Island in the Bass Strait recorded wind gusts of up to 133km/hr.

At the resort destination of Mount Buller in Victoria, there were gusts of up to 107km/hr.
