Blanket of white covers alpines in NSW and Victoria

A vigorous cold storm moving across the east and south coast has brought snow cover over alpine areas in New South Wales and Victoria.

The weather system is moving across the states this week, bringing damaging winds of up to 130km/h until Wednesday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Thredbo, Jindabyne, Mount Ginini, Bowral, Braidwood, Bombala, Adaminaby and Nimmitabel in New South Wales and Wonthaggi, Mount Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Mount Buller and Omeo in Victoria are in the firing line.

Ski resorts in those areas have already seen snow fall over mountain areas today amid strong gusts and sub-zero temperatures.

Perisher and Thredbo have all recorded a natural blanket of white over their resorts, on top of their dozens of snow guns firing overnight.

Falls Creek has seen one centimetre of snow fall while Mount Baw Baw and Mount Hotham have both seen two centimetres.

While the snow was welcomed, the resorts warned some activities like ski lifts in elevated areas may be affected due to harsh winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects snow showers to continue for the rest of the week, aside from Thursday and Saturday when conditions are set to temporarily ease.

Cloudy and windy conditions will persist throughout.

Emergency services have warned residents and visitors to avoid travel if possible, secure outdoor loose items, stay away from fallen powerlines or trees, keep indoors and stay informed.
