Snapshot of Sydney DV murder case

WHO

* The victim: Salwa Haydar, a 45-year-old mother of four, was a former welfare officer for the Arab Council helping families cope with domestic violence. She was killed nine years after her mother died in a bombing in southern Lebanon.

* The killer: her husband Haydar Haydar, 61, a former taxi driver and interpreter.

THEIR RELATIONSHIP

* Had been deteriorating for years. But Haydar did not want a divorce although he had been told to leave his wife's townhouse after staying there temporarily.

CHARGES

* Murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless wounding.

* He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but was found guilty by Justice Peter Garling of murder and the wounding charges relating to his then 18-year-old daughter Ola who was injured trying to stop the attack on her mother.

WHAT HAPPENED

* Haydar stabbed his wife more than 30 times in March 2015 at her Bexley home in southern Sydney because he mistakenly thought she had cheated on him.

ARREST

* Haydar handed himself into Kogarah police station and told the constable on duty: "I have just stabbed my wife."

HIS DEFENCE

* He was affected by an abnormality of the mind. The judge found he suffered from a mild to moderate depressive disorder, but it wasn't sufficient to reduce his moral culpability from murder to manslaughter.

JUDGMENT

* "The attack was an offence of violence taking place in the home. It was of great ferocity and persistence." - Justice Peter Garling.

SENTENCE

* 22 years in prison, with 18 years non-parole period.
