Snapshot of a criminologist's own trials

WHO

* Paul Wilson, 75, New Zealand-born emeritus professor of criminology, whose CV boasts numerous books, official reports and awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2003 for services to education.

CHARGES

* Four counts of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 12, between 1973 and 1976

TRIALS

* His trial was aborted twice within a week in November 2015, with the judge discharging the jury each time.

* The jury at his third retrial in February this year was unable to reach a verdict, despite the judge indicating a majority verdict of 11 out of 12 could be acceptable.

* After an eight-day trial, the jury on Wednesday took about two hours to find Wilson guilty.

WHAT THE JURY HEARD

* Prosecution: Wilson played sex games at his Indooroopilly home, including lying naked on his bed with a cat on his genitals as part of a ruse to get the victim to stroke his penis and making her take off her clothes when he caught her in a game of blindfolded hide-and-seek.

* Defence: The allegations never happened. Wilson said he didn't even know who the victim was at the time the abuse was alleged to have happened and he "never played games with children ever" as it wasn't in his nature.

JUDGMENT

* Judge Julie Dick said the offending was persistent, brazen and involved the corruption of a child "of tender years".

SENTENCE

* 18 months' imprisonment, suspended after six months.
