Snake catcher's warning as blast of warm temperatures hit Australia

A snake catcher has warned Australians to be on the lookout for snakes ahead of warmer spring weather.

The heat has been favourable for the reptiles as they emerge from winter dormancy to hunt for food and to start breeding season.

Stewy the Snake Catcher owner-operator Stewart Gatt has highlighted the increase in snake activity in a post on Facebook.

"I attended 10 jobs (on Sunday), which was the busiest day so far," he said.

"The Wednesday prior I attended seven jobs.

"In the last two weeks we have received a minimum of two calls for snakes every day."

Among Gatt's recent jobs was a displaced coastal carpet python in a banana box.

He warned Australians to remain calm and give snakes plenty of space to escape.

"A snake that feels threatened is dangerous, but if you don't approach or interfere with the snake, then there is next to no danger as snakes don't attack you," he said.

"Please also remember that it is not only illegal, but also extremely dangerous to interact and interfere with any wildlife unless you are trained and licensed to do so."

Australia has farewelled the winter months with a blast of warm temperatures, particularly across the east coast.
