Steamy spring temperatures plummet in Sydney as 90km/h winds sweep city

Temperatures across Sydney plummeted by 12C in just an hour this afternoon after 87km/h wind gusts swept parts of the city.

Conditions reached around 30C today as smoke cloaked the city linked to hazard reduction burns.

Weatherzone meteorologists said a southerly burst of wind swooped in around 3.40pm bringing huge gusts in multiple areas.

Sydney Airport saw 87km/h winds, while Wattamolla in the NSW National Park south of the city received 93km/h winds by 5.37pm according to Bureau of Meteorology observations.

In Kurnell the winds reached 80km/h and gusts across Sydney Harbour reached 82km/h.

The windy conditions came after a smoke haze settled over Sydney's northern beaches for large parts of today due to a controlled hazard reduction burn at Attunga Reserve, near Bilgola Beach.

In North Sydney RFS are also undertook a hazard reduction burn at Brightmore Reserve Oval.

There were also controlled burns taking place at the River Reserve near Picnic Point, Bundanoon Road West in Barden Ridge and Woodfield in Bundeena.
