Small firms package top priority: Cormann

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says getting the government's small business package through the Senate will be a top priority when politicians return to Canberra on Monday.

It will be the final sitting fortnight before the long winter recess.

"Our priority for this fortnight is to get our small business and jobs package through as part of our plan to boost growth and create more jobs," Senator Cormann told Sky News.

The package, a key component of the May budget that includes tax cuts and a $20,000 instant asset write-off for small business, has already passed the House of Representatives.

Senator Cormann said the second week of the fortnight will be focused on pursuing the families package, which includes changes to childcare funding.

This could prove more troublesome for the government, with Labor, the Greens and some independents opposing the cuts to family tax benefits, which are meant help pay for the package.
