As temperatures came close to 30 degrees, Gold Coast residents were quick to get their kit off this morning and have a quick dip.

But beach walkers did a double-take when local favourite ‘Skippy’ the kangaroo was spotted at Labrador escaping the heat by dashing into the water.

While it may seem bizarre to catch the marsupial hopping out of the water, it is not unusual to find ‘Skippy’ in Gold Coast waterways.

The sight is so common that signs have been installed between Coomera Island and Sanctuary Cove to warn people to keep a lookout for the kangaroos, swamp wallabies and agile wallabies in the area.

The marsupials are also known to race into the water to escape predators including dogs.
