Head-on Hunter Valley crash leaves woman and child fighting for life

A horror head-on crash in the New South Wales Hunter Valley has left a woman and child clinging to life.

The pair had to be cut free from the wreck of their car after it collided with a four-wheel-drive on the New England Highway near Singleton just before 11.15am today.

The woman and child were treated at the scene for critical injuries.

Their condition is not yet known.

Two other children in the car have been assessed as having non-life threatening injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the four-wheel-drive has been taken John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.

The road is expected to be closed for some time, with local traffic diversions in place.

Heavy vehicles are advised to seek alternative routes.
