Shorten moots new care worker leave scheme

A long service leave scheme should be introduced for people working in aged care or the disability sector that allows them to get the benefit even if they change employers, Bill Shorten says.

The opposition leader made the comment at a community forum in Perth on Saturday, but added he was just freewheeling, which was "code for not policy".

"They could work with multiple employers, but at least they're getting one payment into a central account for them so that after 10 years, 15 years, they've got that six weeks, 12 weeks worth of pay," he said.

"There's some smart things we could do.

"You just need a workforce approach that recognises the difficulty of the work."
