Shorten doesn't really hate the Libs

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says he doesn't really hate the Liberals and would actually like to work with them on occasions.

Too often in politics everything had to be in black and white, he said.

"The fact of the matter is I don't hate the Liberal Party. I think we have got better ideas. But I think sometimes we have too much conflict," he told Network Ten's The Project program.

Mr Shorten said everything was dumbed down to 15 second sound bites.

"I'd sometimes like to take longer to make my point and work issues through and sometimes work with the Liberals as opposed to always being at each other's throats," he said.

Mr Shorten brushed off one "devastating blow" to his election prospects. That was Bert the psychic crocodile tipping a coalition victory on Saturday.

In a stunt organised by the ever croc-obsessed NT News paper, Bert was given a choice of meat beneath photos of the prime minister and opposition leader. He chose to gnaw the prime ministerial meat.

Mr Shorten said Burt was the name of the new West Australian electorate Labor aims to win.

"I can do with the crocodile. I just need the seat in WA," he said.
