A shark has been spotted in a Sydney suburb more than 20 kilometres away from water.

The dead animal was found on a roundabout at Fairway Drive and Stone Mason Drive in Kellyville around 6.15am today.

The nearest beaches, which include Dee Why, South Curl Curl and Narrabeen Beach, are about an hour away by car.

Police attended the scene and removed the shark from the roadway.

A blurred photo of the carcass was shared to The Hills Police Area Command's Facebook page.

"Interesting call this morning about a shark sighting - 20km inland at Fairway Drive Kellyville," the caption read.

"Not sure how this shark ended up here?"

The image was posted alongside a tongue-in-cheek screenshot of a post from the Dorsal Shark Reports – Australia Facebook page, which appeared to show a shark sighting report for the animal at Kellyville.
