Double shark attack in Whitsundays

Two people have been bitten by a shark in the Whitsundays this morning.

A young girl and a woman, believed to be aged in her 60s, are believed to have been bitten by a shark in shallow beach water at Catseye Beach on Hamilton Island at 9.30am.

Their injuries are not life-threatening. Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the girl has a soft-tissue injury to her foot and the woman has minor injuries to one leg.

The woman is being treated at Hamilton Island Medical Centre. The girl has been transferred to Proserpine Hospital.

Crisis talks were held in November last year after a series of attacks at nearby Cid Harbour.

Melbourne doctor Daniel Christidis died on November 5 after being attacked while on a yachting holiday with friends.

Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick suffered leg injuries and 12-year-old Hannah Papps from Victoria lost a leg in separate attacks in September.

Drum lines were briefly installed in the area and six large sharks were killed following the September attacks, prompting heated debate within the community.

Following the crisis talks, the government has ruled out installing drum lines permanently, instead opting to boost research efforts with a $250,000 grant and conduct "a high-profile education campaign".

"We've listened to the advice of marine scientists and the local tourism industry and have a five-point plan to improve safety in the waters off the Whitsundays," innovation and tourism minister Kate Jones said in a statement at the time.

"All the experts agree that education is the key – that's why… we’ve committed to a 'SharkWISE' campaign to educate people about the risks of swimming in some locations.

"The recent shark attacks in Cid Harbour were unprecedented and demonstrate that we need to do more to understand shark behaviours."
