Teen lifesaver 'shaken' after shark attacks surf ski in Adelaide

A teenage surf lifesaver has been left "shaken" after a shark attack off an Adelaide beach.

Jed, 17, was part of a group of five Glenelg Surf Life Saving club members who were doing surf ski training about 1-1.5km off Glenelg Beach yesterday evening.

At about 6pm, the group were attacked by a shark, which bit Jed's surf ski.

All five people were unharmed and immediately returned to the beach, where they raised the alarm. The shark's breed was not identified.

Jed is being offered counselling services by the club, with his family thanking the community for their support in a statement.

"Jed was shaken and is thankful to be back on dry land," the family said.

"This won't deter him from getting back in the ocean as soon as possible."

Surf Life Saving SA lifesaving and emergency operations manager Daniel Willetts said he was glad the group was unhurt.

"Whilst the incident would no doubt have been quite scary for the members involved, it's important to remember that they were paddling approximately 1-1.5km offshore, and that sharks are more common in deep-water environments," he said.

Mr Willetts urged the public to stay "vigilant" in the water and keep alert for shark alarms.
